One of my very favourite places, and evocative just by its name, Callanish really needs no introduction. Situated on the west coast of the Isle of Lewis, at the very edge of the known world at the time of its conception, this is Britain’s most majestic and awe-inspiring stone circle. Callanish (also spelt Calanais) is thought to have been built between 2900 and 2600 BC, making it earlier in origin than the main circle of Stonehenge. At its heart is a burial chamber dating from a few generations …

AHHH Mac n Cheese,
I think this was in my top 5 of things I missed when I had to go Gluten free. I decided this week to go ahead and make my own. I had almost all of the ingredients on hand so I was excited. I modified the recipe from the one I found on Daiya’s website.
Servings: 4
|
8 ounces gluten-free or regular pasta, any shape
3 cups Daiya style Shreds 3 tablespoons vegan butter 2 cups 1 tablespoon nutritional yeast- I prefer Bragg’s ¼ teaspoon black pepper ½ cup gluten-free bread crumbs- I used Glutino and didn’t really like it ;( ¼ teaspoon paprika ¼ cup vegan parmesan cheese (optional) |
So, the whole time I am cooking I keep telling myself, be careful of the pot, don’t grab the handle its hot. Can you see where I am going with this? I actually made it thru the whole entire process of cooking without any incident. When my husband came home that night, I went to heat him up some in the oven and told myself once again as I was putting it in to be careful. Sometimes I wonder if the voices in my head just taunt me because they know eventually I am gonna grab the handle. I pull it out of the oven with mitts on, yeah me!! Then I turn and set the table for dinner and everything is awesome looking. I walk to the stove and I am not joking pick the stupid pot up by the flesh melting handle. It was like slow motion.
Immediately tears start streaming down my face and I can’t even talk because I feel like a complete ass. I turn on the cold water and plunge my hand under. By this time my husband is asking what he can do to help and I have him make up the cure all for burns- Baking soda and water. I left the paste on for 5 hours and every time I took it off my hand still burned. This is not good, I knew at that time it went beyond first degree and up into second degree. Last Christmas my folks were in town and my dad didn’t turn off the gas burner all the way and had sent a glass dish down on it. No one knows how long it was on the burner before I picked it up. I actually heard my skin sizzle. Gross. I soaked my fingertips in Baking soda paste for 2 hours and no problem at all
So, I went to the place that everyone goes when they hurt themselves bad, no not the ER, the internet!!! Turns out that if you wrap Aluminum Foil around a burn it wicks the heat away and stops the pain. I hurt so bad I figured why not. I wrapped my hand in tin foil and waited. 10 min later the pain subsided and I fell asleep with my tinfoil claw on. Its day 3 now and while I feel deep blistering in some parts of my hand I really think the tin foil helped more than I thought it would.
So in conclusion, don’t keep telling yourself not to pick up hot pans, its the universe setting you up. If you do happen to burn yourself, tinfoil… Its not just to make hats out of!! Who knew…..
